Over the past few years, the importance of looking after our mental health has gathered more and more attention. The past year, especially, showed us how beneficial getting out in the fresh air can be for our wellbeing. More people are also now realising the benefits of taking their training outdoors as well. The team at Elite Outdoor Fitness Academy provide a comprehensive schedule of outdoor fitness classes here in Essex. We wanted to talk today not about the physical health benefits of these outdoor sessions, but the mental health benefits. One of the biggest benefits of our Essex outdoor fitness classes is undoubtedly the uplifting affect it can have on mood and mental state. Whether you suffer from anxiety, depression, seasonal affective disorder (SAD) or just are having a bit of a rough day, mentally speaking, spending more time outdoors increases the brain’s production of serotonin, the body’s mood-enhancing hormone. If you then pair that with the feel-good endorphins that a workout provides you’ve got a wellness double-whammy.
For many people, the thought of being even out of the house again is a daunting one, let alone doing a group activity. Before the pandemic struck, we’d never even heard of social distancing; nowadays, it’s all anyone can ever talk about. By choosing our outdoor fitness classes to help keep you healthy, any pandemic-induced worries are put to bed. The risk of viral transmission is known to be massively lower in outdoor settings when compared with indoor environments – almost 19 times less likely in fact, according to some studies.
If you’ve not taken part in any outdoor fitness classes before, instead having preferred to pound the treadmill for hours or crank out a late-night gym workout, then you’ve been missing out. At our Essex boot camp, part of the experience is in going through that workout with other people. Our sessions are designed to give you a good workout and not beast you like some sort of horrible military training! It’ll still work up a sweat, though, and it’s far easier to stay motivated when you’re going through those same exercises alongside others.
How many times over the past year have you actually ended up speaking to people, in person? Whilst headline-grabbing reports saying we’ll have “forgotten how to socialise” might be a bit much, we shouldn’t underestimate just how much we’ve missed that social interaction. Zoom parties are one thing, picking up on social cues face-to-face is quite another. Seeing different people and getting regular interactions with them is a crucial part of human nature – we’re highly sociable creatures. The chance to get to regularly see different people, therefore, especially after the year we’ve had will almost certainly have a positive impact on freshening up your mental state.
When you achieve a goal, you feel good about it and good about yourself. To achieve the goals that we set ourselves, we need to motivate ourselves – at least to an extent. When it comes to health and fitness, many of us set goals for ourselves which we then, for whatever reason, don’t manage to achieve. Just as in the way that achieving a goal can make you feel great, not achieving one often also really affects how you feel about yourself. Feelings of failure and frustration are all too common when we don’t manage to achieve what we set out. A lack of motivation is often the cause of these goals not being met; our outdoor fitness classes help you address this! Attend our classes, set goals, meet goals – feel good! What’s not to like?
The thing with training indoors or in a gym setting – even if it’s part of a group – is that it can feel quite pressurised and serious. By taking part in outdoor fitness classes, it just has more of a feeling of enjoyment to it – maybe it’s a throwback to our time running around outdoors, who knows? But for whatever reason, training outdoors feels as much like play as it does anything else. Instead of staring at the clock, willing the end of your session to come around, you’ll find yourself wondering where the time went and maybe even wishing the session had lasted longer – okay, maybe not quite. The point, though, is that outdoor training is usually much more fun than the indoor equivalent. Call us as biased as you like, we know it’s true!
The outdoor fitness classes at our Essex boot camp take place in a specially created outdoors space. This is complete with various training zones and all the equipment you could possibly need to get your heart-rate going. Our zones focus on functional fitness – fitness that replicates everyday life rather than countless hundreds of bicep curls in front of a mirror. We've got a highly-skilled team of personal trainers and a designated car park. Not only that, but we've got an indoor training space, as well. That means we can train even if the weather gets really nasty. In other words, we’ve got everything you could possibly need for a great workout!
